Sean Justin Penn, age 62, is an American actor and filmmaker. He is the son of actor and director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan.
Merkin, a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania, was his father; his mother is an Irish Catholic who is of Italian ancestry. Penn was raised in a nonreligious environment in Malibu, California, and went to Santa Monica High School and Malibu Park Junior High School because Malibu didn’t have a high school at the time. Actors Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, who lived close by, were some of Penn’s boyhood pals with whom he started creating short films.
In addition to his work in film, Penn has been active in political and social causes. Some of these include his criticism of the George W. Bush administration, his interactions with the presidents of Cuba and Venezuela, and his humanitarian efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Haiti earthquake in 2010.
