James Byrd Jr., an African American man born on May 2, 1949, and passed away on June 7, 1998, in Jasper, Texas, at the hands of three white men, two of whom were open white supremacists.

He was dragged three miles (five kilometers) by Shawn Berry, Lawrence Brewer, and John King behind a Ford pickup truck on an asphalted road.

About halfway through the dragging, Byrd—who had been conscious for the majority of the ordeal—was killed when his body struck the edge of a culvert, severing his head and right arm.

After travelling for an additional 1 1⁄2 miles (2.5 kilometers), the killers dumped his corpse in front of a Black church.

Shawn Berry Release Date

The prosecution at Shawn Allen Berry’s trial (born February 12, 1975) acknowledged that Berry was not a white supremacist, but they maintained that Berry shared equal responsibility for Byrd’s murder with the other men and raised the possibility that Berry was a thrill killer.

Berry was consequently spared the death penalty and given a life sentence in prison. Berry was residing in protective custody at the Ramsey Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as of 2020. He will be eligible for parole for the first time in June 2038, when he turns 63.
