Fatima Meer was a South African writer, academic, scriptwriter, and anti-apartheid campaigner who lived from 12 August 1928 to 12 March 2010.

Fatima Meer was born in the Grey Streets of Durban, South Africa, into a middle-class family of nine children, where her father, Moosa Ismail Meer, a newspaper editor of The Indian Views, instilled in her a sense of the country’s racial inequality.

Rachel Farrell, Moosa Ismail Meer’s second wife, was her mother. Her mother was an orphan of Jewish and Portuguese ancestry.

She became Muslim and changed her name to Amina. She raised £1000 for famine assistance in Bengal, India, when she was 16 years old in 1944. Her education journey concluded at Durban Indian Girls High School.

During Fatima Meer’s student years, she took the initiative to rally fellow students in establishing the Student Passive Resistance Committee. This group aimed to raise funds in support of the Indian community’s passive resistance campaign spanning from 1946 to 1948.
