Renowned author and illustrator, Shirley Hughes, has died. Born on July 16, 1927, she died on February 25, 2022, at the age of 94.

Shirley Hughes gave us all a blissful childhood with her everyday stories of early childhood. Her career has spanned 7-decades.

Her notable books include Dogger, The Big Alfie, and Annie Rose Storybook, Out and About, just to mention a few.

She died “peacefully at home after a short illness” on Friday in London, her family told the PA news agency.

“Shirley’s books about everyday family life are adored by generations of families and she is held in the highest esteem by her peers,” they said

In her 70-year-long career, she has illustrated more than 200 books for children and has sold more than 10million copies.

Reacting to her death, Clara Vulliamy, her daughter tweeted: “Shirley Hughes, 1927 – 2022, who showed us that love is kind, brave and loyal, and that the beauty in this world is in the big picture and in the detail. This isn’t goodbye, Mum will shine brightly forever.”

Shirley and her husband had three children together, the journalist Ed Vulliamy, the geneticist Tom Vulliamy, and Clara Vulliamy, who is also a children’s book illustrator.

Ed Vulliamy is Journalist and correspondent. He is well Known for War reporting in Bosnia and Iraq. Ed was born on August 1, 1954.

Ed Vulliamy has two daughters, Elsa Madeleine and Claudia Lucy. Vulliamy has been a vegetarian since the age of eight after he questioned what happens to sheep.

Tom Vuliamy

Tom Vuliamy is in the Scientific field. Little is known about him since he keeps his life on a low profile. He obtained a Zoology degree at Oxford University and a Ph.D. working with Martin Raff at UCL.


Since then has worked in human genetics, initially with Jim Gusella at Harvard Medical School and then with Lucio Luzzatto at the Hammersmith Hospital in London.

He worked as a Clinical Scientist running a small molecular diagnostic laboratory while collaborating with Inderjeet Dokal and Philip Mason in the cloning of disease genes.

He was appointed Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London SMD in 2006 and promoted to Professor in 2015.

Clara Vulliamy

Clara Vulliamy was born in 1962. She followed in the footsteps of her mother. She is also an illustrator and author. She has helped her mother even on some book projects.


Clara is best known for her Dixie O’Day series (Random House), aimed at children aged 5+, for which she collaborated with her mother, Shirley Hughes.

Clara has also created a pre-school series, Martha and the Bunny Brothers (Harper Collins) and collaborated with James Mayhew on Bubble and Squeak (Orchard).

Clara has also rejuvenated four Mary Plain titles, by author Gwynedd Rae (Egmont).
