Sidney L. Poitier KBE as he was chiefly addressed, was a Bahamian- American actor, film director, ambassador and activist. He was born on February 20, 1927, and died on January 6, 2022. He was active in his chosen career from 1946–2009.
He became the Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997 to 2007. He was the husband of Canadian film actress Joanna Shimkus and the father of actress Sydney Tamiia Poitier.
He has won many awards for his roles in the film industry such as Academy Award for Best Actor (1964). He also received ten Golden Globe nominations, eight Laurel nominations, two Academy Award nominations. He was popular for the films Blackboard Jungle (1955), The Defiant Ones (1958), and Lilies of the Field (1963).
