There are three basic ways that HIV can spread: through sexual contact, by prolonged contact with bodily fluids or tissues that are infected, and through nursing or delivery from a mother to her unborn child (known as vertical transmission).
Unless these are contaminated with blood, there is no risk of contracting HIV from contact with feces, nasal secretions, saliva, sputum, sweat, tears, urine, or vomit.
Additionally, co-infection with many HIV strains is a possibility and is referred to as HIV superinfection. Sexual contact with an infected person is the most common way that HIV is spread.
However, an HIV-positive person who has undergone prolonged treatment and has an undetectable viral load essentially has no risk of HIV transmission.
