Stephen Burum to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Cinematographer Stephen Burum — whose assortment of work incorporates 1988’s The Untouchables, one of eight movies he made with Brian De Palma; and 1993’s Hoffa, for which he was Oscar-assigned — will get the Lifetime Achievement Award at the current year’s EnergaCamerimage global cinematography celebration.

The 30th version of Camerimage will be held Nov. 12-19 in Toruń, Poland.

The California local went to the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and acquired his most memorable expert experience working behind the camera in 1964 on Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.

In the Army, he chipped away at preparing films. Early work remembered Little House for the Prairie, for which Burum shot MagiCam embeds. He shared a specialized speciality Emmy Award for the enhanced visualizations of the 1980 PBS science program Cosmos.

In 1976, Burum filled in as the second unit cameraman and chief on Apocalypse Now, coordinated by Francis Ford Coppola, whom he met at UCLA, and afterwards on the second unit of The Black Stallion, coordinated by UCLA partner Carroll Ballard.

Burum’s most memorable element as a DP was 1982’s The Escape Artist, coordinated by Caleb Deschanel.

In the mid-’80s, Burum again joined Coppola on The Outsiders and Rumble Fish. He likewise lensed Uncommon Valor, St. Elmo’s Fire and 8 Million Ways to Die. Burum proceeded to work with Danny DeVito, for whom he shot The War of the Roses and Hoffa.

The DP is most popular for his joint effort with chief De Palma, with whom he made eight movies, including The Untouchables, Body Double, Casualties of War, Raising Cain, Carlito’s Way, and Mission: Impossible, Snake Eyes and Mission to Mars.

An individual from the American Society of Cinematographers, Burum got an ASC Award for Hoffa and extra designations for The Untouchables and The War of the Roses.

He was feted with the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

All the more as of late, Burum got back to his foundations by leading film classes as a feature of the Kodak Cinematographer-in-Residence program at the UCLA Film School.
