Former President Donald Trump was charged with four counts on Tuesday, August 1 by special counsel Jack Smith in relation to his plans to rig the 2020 election.

After losing to Joe Biden, the 77-year-old former president allegedly “pursued unlawful means of discounting legitimate votes and subverting the election results” in an effort to hold onto power.

The 45th president was accused by prosecutors led by Smith of losing his reelection due to his repeated allegations of election fraud since they “were untrue and [Trump] knew they were false.

“But the Defendant repeated and widely disseminated them anyway — to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, create an intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and erode public faith in the administration of the election.”

This would be Smith’s second attempt to indict Trump.

Accusations against Trump for allegedly hoarding national security papers at his Florida estate Mar-a-Lago have resulted in 40 federal counts against him.

At the federal courthouse in Washington, DC, the grand jury inquiring into the former president convened for a number of hours on Tuesday, but the meeting was adjourned a few hours before the indictment was announced.
