The Anambra Vigilante Group has murdered two alleged gunmen who are terrorizing citizens of the state.

The tragedy occurred in Umuhu Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of the state, in the early hours of Monday, June 19, 2023.

Gunmen have carried out many attacks in Ihiala LGA, which borders Imo State.

According to the Daily Trust, some 15 gunmen invaded the vigilante operators’ camp, assuming they were asleep, and attempted to open fire on them before security officers rapidly mobilised and repelled them in a gun battle.

“Around 3 a.m. today, some hoodlums launched an attack on Anambra Security Forces, but were resisted vehemently.”

“Two of the gunmen were killed during a gunfight, and two AK-47 rifles were recovered, while many fled the scene,” a source told the publication.

“Many of the gunmen who fled due to the superior firepower of the security operatives sustained various degrees of injury and bullet wounds, while members of the Anambra Security Forces escaped unharmed.”

In a statement, Christian Aburime, the Press Secretary to the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, verified the occurrence.

“Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration continues to prioritize the need for a sane and secure environment in Anambra State.” As a result, security forces remain steadfast in their determination to protect the lives and property of nd Anambra, visitors, and all citizens alike.”

Some residents were overjoyed with the news, claiming that the hoodlums had been terrorizing the neighborhood for a long time. no

“The hoodlums had been terrorising Okija for a long time,” a resident named Chinwendu claimed. “Most of the time, they come in the name of enforcing the Monday sit-at-home and use it to unleash mayhem.” This is why the residents of the neighborhood formed a security committee. And we thank God that the project has begun to bear fruit. Our team is determined to complete this job successfully.”

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesman for the State Police Command, verified the event and urged operators of both private and public hospitals to report any patients with bullet wounds.

The PPRO went on to say that the police are already working along with vigilantes to apprehend fleeing gang members who have gunshot wounds or other injuries.

“The AVG operatives repelled the attack at their Okija office in the early hours of today, 19/6/2023, demobilizing two of the attackers and recovering two Ak-47 rifles.” “There were no casualties among the operatives, and the AVG office remains intact,” Ikenga said.

“In addition, the Command wishes to take advantage of this opportunity to urge owners of both private and public hospitals to admit but report all persons with gunshot or related injuries to the nearest police station.”

“From what our men have learned, the fleeing suspects have bullet wounds, and we are working with AVG operatives to find them.”

“We are only requesting that operators of private hospitals and managers of public hospitals in the area be alert and report people who arrive for treatment with bullet wounds.”

“You may not completely reject them, but upon admission, make sure you notify the police so that we can identify such a person and investigate the source of such a bullet injury,” he added.
