After ‘intentionally’ setting fire to their home, a seven-year-old child was taken into custody and charged with first-degree arson.
The child set the fire while their parents slept inside the home in Jackson County, West Virginia, on Wednesday morning, May 24.
In the Elizabeth area, there were reports of a house fire at around noon.
According to Chief Deputy State Incident Marshal Robert Bailey, two people had minor burn injuries as a result of the incident, but everyone was able to escape the house without harm.
Officials shared a photo from the scene that appeared to show the property engulfed in flames.
The juvenile was taken into custody Wednesday evening after the blaze.
Due to the sensitivity of the case, the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, which is investigating the fire, said no additional information will be released just yet.
In West Virginia, accusations against children can be made by a criminal complaint or a citation.
