Vaja Azarashvili, born on July 13, 1936, in Tbilisi, Georgia, was a renowned Georgian composer, pianist, and teacher. He came from a musical family, with his father, Shalva Azarashvili, being passionate about folk music.

Azarashvili began his musical education at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, studying under notable teachers such as Aleksandre Shaverzashvili and Iona Tuskiya.

He completed his post-graduate degree in 1961 under the guidance of Andria Balanchivadze. He also served as the chairperson of the Union of Composers of Georgia from 1998 to 2007.

Azarashvili’s works were performed by esteemed artists such as Nani Bregvadze, Giuli Chokheli, Vakhtang Kikabidze, Eter Kakulia, Tamara Gverdtsiteli, Merab Sepashvili, Orera, VIA Iveria, and Teatroni. His contributions to Georgian music were recognized with various honors, including being named an Honored Worker of Art, a People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR, and receiving the Knight of the Order of Honor.

Vaja Azarashvili passed away on February 7, 2024, at the age of 87.
