Veteran Radio DJ Winnie Mahlangu is dead.

Legendary South African radio DJ, Winnie Mahlangu has died. The sad news of her passing was announced and confirmed by SABC in a statement.

Winnie Mahlangu died at the age of 88 on 27 January 2022 after a short illness.


The legendary Winnie Mahlangu was the first DJ to ever work at Ukhozi FM. She joined the radio station in 1962 when the radio was known as Radio Bantu.

For the first time in 2020, the SABC held a female DJ search, dubbed Winnie Mahlangu Female Presenter Search, in her honor. This search was also part of the Women’s Month celebrations.

According to SABC, “Mahlangu was well-known for her warm nature, meaningful influence to the station as well as her contribution to empowerment female counterparts in the industry.”
