Zahara, born Bulelwa Mkutukana on November 9, 1987, was a South African singer and songwriter.

Zahara was known for her passion for music from a young age, starting as a street performer. Zahara’s music was a mixture of various musical styles popularized by Tracy Chapman and India Arie, and she sang in her native language, Xhosa, as well as in English.

Zahara’s debut album, “Loliwe,” released in 2011, went platinum in just 13 days and double platinum in 17 days, selling over 100,000 copies in South Africa.

It earned her eight wins at the South African Music Awards in April 2012, including “Album of the Year” and “Best Female Artist”. Zahara’s music career was marked by numerous accolades and nominations, including a Best Produced Album award for her “Country Girl” album.

Zahara’s personal life was not widely known, but she was married to her longtime partner, Ian Sibiya, in 2019. Zahara passed away on December 11, 2023, at the age of 36. Zahara’s death was mourned by fans and fellow musicians alike, who recognized her contributions to the South African music industry and her impact on the Afro-soul genre.
