Alexei Navalny was of Russian and Ukrainian heritage. His father was from Zalissia, a former hamlet near the Belarusian border that was resettled after the Chernobyl tragedy in Ivankiv Raion, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. Navalny grew up in Obninsk, some 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of Moscow, but spent the summers with his grandmother in Ukraine, where he learned the Ukrainian language.

In 1998, he earned his law degree from Russia’s Peoples’ Friendship University. Navalny was awarded a fellowship to the Yale World Fellows programme at Yale University in 2010.
