Dame Mary Quant, who created the miniskirt and is revered as a fashion icon, attended art school. In the late 1950s, she started creating her own clothing.
In contrast to earlier designers, the London-based fashion designer had one key advantage: She was a member of the same generation as her clients, not an older one.
Quant launched her own retail store named Bazaar on Kings Road in 1955 after becoming convinced that fashion needs to be accessible to young people and affordable in order to be popular, ushering in the “mod” era and the “Chelsea look.”
Mary Quant was born on February 11, 1930, to Welsh teachers Jack and Mildred Quant, who came from mining families, in London's Blackheath district. Mary was always certain she wanted to work in the fashion industry.
Quant attended Blackheath High School before enrolling in Goldsmiths College to study illustration as a compromise with her parents, who thought the fashion profession was too dangerous. After earning a degree in art education from Goldsmiths, Quant went on to train as a couture milliner, after which she started creating clothing.
What Did Mary Quant Die Of?
