What Did Paolo Macchiarini Do?

Former Italian thoracic surgeon Paolo Macchiarini became well-known throughout the world for his groundbreaking work in the field of regenerative medicine, particularly for creating artificial windpipes (tracheas) from patient stem cells. At first, his work was hailed as revolutionary and had the potential to completely transform organ transplantation.

In 2011, Macchiarini implanted an artificial windpipe coated with the stem cells of the patient, performing the first-ever stem cell-supported synthetic trachea transplant in history. This process attracted a lot of interest and was regarded as a major breakthrough in regenerative medicine.

But soon after, Macchiarini was the centre of controversy as concerns about the morality and security of his methods surfaced. There were claims that he had misled patients and the public about the success rates of his surgeries, and that a number of patients who had the experimental procedures done either died or suffered from serious complications.

Using stem cells from his patients, Paolo Macchiarini implanted plastic tracheas in at least eight patients beginning in 2011.

He was regarded as a trailblazer who could restore or extend the life of those who were born with damage to their windpipes or without one. The lone survivor, though, had their transplant removed.
