What Disease Does A Possum Carry?

Opossums are members of the marsupial order. They are the largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere. They comprise of over 120 species in 19 genera. The animal originally hail from South America. They entered North America during the Great American Interchange that followed after the connection of North and South America.

The only species found in Canada and the United States of America is the Virginia Opossum. It is commonly referred to as a possum in North America. They are naturally nonaggressive animals.

What Disease Does A Possum Carry?

Opossums are not the typical bacteria-carrying animals such as rats. This is a result of a low body temperature as compared to other species. However, there are a whole of a lot of conditions that can be carried and transmitted by the opossums to other animals and humans as well.

Some of the bacteria and conditions they can carry include:

  • Rabies
  • Leptospirosis
  • Salmonella
  • Tularemia among many others.
