The late Zahara was an acclaimed South African singer-songwriter.

In the Phumlani Informal Settlement, which is located outside of East London in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, Zahara was born as Bulelwa Mkutukana.

She is the sixth child of seven and resided there with her parents, Nokhaya and Mlamli Mkutukana.

At the age of nine, Zahara was invited to join the senior choir due to her powerful voice, having begun singing in the school chorus at the age of six.

She sadly passed away on December 11, 2023, at a Johannesburg hospital.

Known for her Afro-soul music, Zahara rose to fame with her debut album “Loliwe” in 2011, achieving double platinum status.

Her subsequent albums, including “Phendula” (2013), “Country Girl” (2015), and “Mgodi” (2017), earned her numerous awards.

Zahara returned in 2021 with her fifth album, “Nqaba Yam,” showcasing her versatility with Amapiano influences.

She made a mark as a guest judge on Idols South Africa in 2021.
