Ross was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, to carpenter Jack Ross and waitress Ollie Ross, and was reared in Orlando, Florida.

Ross rescued injured creatures as a child, including armadillos, snakes, alligators, and squirrels, one of whom was featured in multiple episodes of his television show.

Jim, his half-brother, was mentioned on his show in passing. Ross was a ninth-grader when he dropped out of high school. He lost part of his left index finger while working as a carpenter with his father, yet this did not impede his ability to later handle a palette while painting.

Ross was married three times and had two children: a son, Robert Stephen “Steve” Ross, with his first wife, Vivian Ridge, and a kid he fathered from a connection he had as a teenager. Steve, a gifted painter, was featured on The Joy of Painting on occasion and went on to become a Ross-certified instructor.
