According to sources close to her family, renowned performer and theater artist Uttara Baokar passed away at age 79 in Pune, Maharashtra, after a protracted illness.
On Tuesday, Uttara Baokar, who had been ill for the previous year, passed away in a hospital. They claimed that her final rites were carried out on Wednesday morning.
The National School of Drama (NSD)-trained actress Uttara Baokar has performed in a variety of roles, including Padmavati in Mukyhamantri, Mena in Mena Gurjari, Desdemona in Shakespeare's Othello, and mother in playwright Girish Karnad's Tughlaq, among others.
Following her appearance in the film Tamas directed by Govind Nihlani, Uttara Baokar gained notoriety.
She performed in several of Sumitra Bhave's feature films. According to director Sunil Sukthankar, he collaborated with her on about eight feature films, and longtime partner Sumitra Bhave once thought she was an actor who could represent powerful female characters.
