Shriya Shah-Klorfine was a Nepal-born Canadian woman who became the first Canadian woman of South Asian origin to summit Mount Everest on May 19, 2012. Shriya was born on January 11, 1979, in Kathmandu, Nepal, and grew up in Mumbai, India.

Shah-Klorfine attended Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu before moving to Canada to be with her husband and start an import business. Shriya was also a businesswoman who started “SOS Splash of Style Inc.”.

Shah-Klorfine had a lifelong dream of climbing Mount Everest and had mortgaged her house to pay for the expedition, which cost nearly $100,000. Shriya prepared for the trek by walking hills around her home near Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue, while wearing a 20-kilogram backpack.

Shah-Klorfine died while descending from the summit of Mount Everest on May 19, 2012, along with two other climbers, due to exhaustion and altitude sickness. Shriya’s contributions to mountaineering and her determination to achieve her lifelong dream have left a lasting impact on her fans and colleagues.
