Agustín Morales was the president of Bolivia from 1871 to 1872. Morales was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1808. Morales had a military background and served as a general in the Bolivian army.

Morales came to power through a coup d’état in 1871, deposing the previous president Tomás Frías Ametller. The coup was in response to a border dispute with Chile over the mineral-rich Atacama Desert region.

As president, Morales took a hardline stance against Chile in the dispute over the Atacama territory. This contributed to escalating tensions that ultimately led to the War of the Pacific from 1879-1884 between Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

Morales had a relatively brief and tumultuous presidency. Morales faced internal political opposition and unrest during his time in office.

In 1872, he was ousted from the presidency through another military coup, this time led by General Hilarión Daza. Morales went into exile in Peru after being deposed. Morales died in exile in 1882 in Tacna, Peru at the age of 74.
