American singer, songwriter, and pianist, Alicia Keys. Keys, a musically trained pianist, began writing songs when she was 12 years old and was signed by Columbia Records at the age of 15.

Keys signed with Arista Records following disagreements with the label, and in 2001, Songs in a Minor, her debut album, was released through J Records. Over 12 million copies of the record were sold globally, both critically and commercially successful.

In Manhattan, a borough of New York City, namely in the Hell’s Kitchen district Keys was born and raised. She is the only child of Teresa Augello, a paralegal and occasional actor, and one of Craig Cook’s three children, a flight attendant. Keys’ mother is of Italian, Irish, and Scottish ancestry, while her father is African American.

In 1994, Keys, then 13 years old, was a member of Teens in Motion, a youth group run by his brother, when manager Jeff Robinson first met him. Keys had been receiving vocal training from Robinson’s brother in Harlem.
