Jim Inhofe, the son of Blanche (née Mountain) and Perry Dyson Inhofe, was born in Des Moines, Iowa.
As a young child, he relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his family. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1953 and served in the American Army from 1957 to 1958.
The University of Tulsa awarded Inhofe a B.A. in economics in 1973.
Inhofe’s official biographies and media accounts about him before his 1994 bid for the U.S. Senate stated that he had graduated in 1959.
Inhofe originally refuted the reports that revealed the inconsistency, but he later came around.
Inhofe first acknowledged the veracity of the stories before going on to say that he had been permitted to participate in graduation ceremonies in 1959 despite only having earned a handful of the required credits for his degree and not finishing his study until 1973.
