Cannon was born and raised in San Diego, California. He was brought up by his paternal granddad, whom both he and his biological father see as their father. He grew up in Lincoln Park's Bay Vista Housing Projects, which is a gang-ridden section of Southeast San Diego.
While in his teens he was affiliated with the Lincoln Park Bloods street gang but asserted that he left behind his associations after losing a close friend.
