The World’s Biggest Liar is an annual lie-telling competition held in Cumbria, England. International competitors have five minutes to tell the biggest and most convincing lie they can.

Props and scripts are not permitted in the competition. Politicians and lawyers are prohibited from participating in the competition because “they are judged to be too skilled at telling lies.”

Every November at the Bridge Inn in Santon Bridge, the World’s Biggest Liar competition is held in honor of Will Ritson (1808–1890), a pub landlord from Wasdale who was well known for his “tall tales.” One of Ritson’s most famous lies was that in the Lake District, turnips grew so large that people carved them out to make cow sheds.

After telling a story about how he was crowned King of the Wasdale Valley, Abrie Krueger of South Africa was named the world’s biggest liar in 2003, according to Wikipedia.

This was the first time a foreigner had won the competition, which had been marred by accusations that Krueger had cheated. “I have never told a lie in my life,” a Bishop of Carlisle was said to have once won the competition with the shortest speech ever.
