In his Independence Day speech on 15 August 2003, India’s Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, confirmed that the Chandrayaan 1 project was on track.

The mission provided a significant boost to India’s space programme. The idea of an Indian research expedition to the Moon was originally discussed during a meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1999.

The idea was taken up by the Astronautical Society of India (ASI) in 2000. Soon after, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) established the National Lunar Mission Task Force, which determined that ISRO possesses the technological expertise to carry out an Indian mission to the Moon.

In April 2003, a gathering of over 100 esteemed Indian scientists from various disciplines including planetary and space sciences, Earth sciences, physics, chemistry, astronomy, astrophysics, engineering, and communication sciences convened to deliberate on and endorse the Task Force’s proposal to initiate an Indian lunar exploration.

Following this, six months later in November, the Indian government granted its approval for the mission.
