Lowes Foods was founded in 1954, in Wilkesboro, North Carolina USA, with a single store opened by Jim Lowe, the former co-owner of what became Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, and son of its founder. Jim later sold that store to J. C. Faw. Expansion in Wilkesboro and the mountain regions of North Carolina then followed shortly.

Lowes Foods is owned by Alex Lee, Inc., an American wholesale and distributor portfolio headquartered in Hickory, North Carolina. It is ranked 139 on the list of largest privately held companies in the United States, as listed by Forbes.

Alex Lee also owns Merchants Distributors, Inc., which supplies more than 600 stores located in nine states, mostly in the Southeast. The company now supplies more than 600 stores located in eleven states, mostly in the Southeast.
