He first became popular for his appearances in A Face in the Crowd and No Time for Sergeants in the 1950s.

Afterward, he was cast as the lead character in the American comedy sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show, and also in Matlock.

Griffith had two children; Andy Griffith Jr., his biological son, and Dixie Griffith, his adopted daughter.
