Robert John Maguire was an Australian Roman Catholic priest, community worker and media personality who worked as parish priest of Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church in South Melbourne from 1973 to 2012.

Brought forth into the world on September 14, 1934, his parents have been identified as Annie McLoughlin and James Maguire.

Bob Maguire was popularly known as Father Bob and remained a native of Thornbury, Victoria, his birthplace.

Maguire died on April 19, 2023, at the age of 88 from an undisclosed death cause.

Why Did Father Bob Retire?

Father Bob took to his blog on September 7, 2009, to announce that he had been contacted by church authorities, asking to tender his resignation on his upcoming 75th birthday.
Maguire’s reply was a public announcement saying he would leave the decision of whether he should stay or go to his congregation, reports say

Maguire was finally forced to retire at age 77 after holding his last church service on 29 January 2012 at Sts. Peter and Paul’s Church in South Melbourne.

Maguire who was forced to retire had his life and forced retirement become the subject of the 2013 feature-length documentary In Bob We Trust. The documentary was directed by Lynn-Maree Milburn.
