Former free safety in American football, Charles Marquise Godfrey was born on November 15, 1985. The Carolina Panthers selected him in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft after he played college football for Iowa.
Godfrey participated in 47 games while a student at the University of Iowa, starting 28 of them. Of those, 25 were as a cornerback, two as a strong safety, and one as a free safety. 193 tackles and seven interceptions were registered during his career. He had 83 tackles during his junior season and two interceptions. His 65 tackles and five interceptions as a senior totaled 5 yards.

The fourth choice in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft went to Godfrey. In a transaction that sent Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets, the Panthers earlier obtained the pick from them along with a fifth-round pick used to draft Gary Barnidge. Godfrey was re-signed by the Panthers on September 10, 2011, to a contract extension worth $27.5 million over five years, with $12.4 million guaranteed.
