Gretchen Esther Whitmer (born August 23, 1971) is an American lawyer and politician who has served as Michigan’s 49th governor since 2019. She was a Democrat who served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006, as well as the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
Whitmer was born in Michigan and raised there. She attended Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan State University, and the Michigan State University College of Law, which was known as the Detroit College of Law at the time.
Gretchen Whitmer ran for the state House of Representatives unsuccessfully in the 1990s before being elected in 2000. She was elected as a state senator in 2006, a position she held until term limits forced her to resign in 2015. From 2011 to 2015, she was the Senate’s first female Democratic leader.
Whitmer gained national attention in 2013 for a floor speech during an abortion debate in which she shared her experience of sexual assault. She was the county prosecutor for Ingham County for six months in 2016.
