The American magician known as Harry Houdini, whose real name is Erik Weisz, was born on March 24, 1874, in Budapest and passed away on October 31, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan.
Rabbi Houdini was Houdini’s father, whose family immigrated to the United States from Hungary and resided in Appleton, Wisconsin.
He began his career as a trapeze artist in circuses at a young age, and after relocating to New York City in 1882, he struggled to find success in circus performances there. He married Wilhelmina Rahner in 1894, and she later worked as his stage assistant as Beatrice Houdini.
Around the year 1900, Houdini started to gain international recognition for his spectacular escapes from handcuffs, ropes, and shackles as well as from various other sealed receptacles like milk containers, coffins, and prison cells.
