Education and early life
Italian-born Pierre Baldi, who was raised in Rome, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science at the University of Paris. The following year, in 1986, he graduated from the California Institute of Technology with a Ph.D. in mathematics under the direction of R. M. Wilson.
Career and research
He served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego, from 1986 to 1988. He held professor and technical staff roles at the California Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1988 to 1995.
In 1993, he received the Lew Allen Award for Excellence at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. From 1995 to 1999, he served as the CEO of a young startup called Net-ID before joining the University of California, Irvine.
Through the investigation of the mathematical underpinnings of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning, as well as their applications to issues in the natural sciences, including physics, chemistry, and biology, Baldi’s research aims to understand intelligence in brains and machines.
