Sidney Poitier KBE was an actor, film director, and diplomat of Bahamian descent. He was the very first African-American and Bahamian to receive the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1964. He was born on February 20, 1927.
Poitier was delivered two months prematurely in Miami while his parents were traveling. He stayed in Miami for three months until he was well enough to return to the Bahamas with his mom and dad, where he was reared.
