Teddy Balkind, a sixteen year old and a sophomore at St. Luke’s School, in New Canaan, tragically passed away after a player’s skate blade cut his neck in an on-ice collision during a game on 6 January, 2022 in Greenwich, Conn.
This type of accident is so rare and has sparked calls for players to wear neck protection in the games. Teddy Balkind’s cause of death has been flagged as an accident by a medical examiner.
The accident occurred on Thursday 6 January 2022, when Teddy Balkind and another player collided. Teddy reportedly fell down and the skate of the player cut open his neck. The deceased who was a tenth grader was rushed to Greenwich Hospital, where he passed away from his injuries.
The sad news is a big blow to Teddy Balkind’s family and the school as a whole. When his demise was announced, an old post he shared on Instagram on 4 March 2020 went viral;
“It’s been a great eight years with the winter club and it ended in the best way possible #state champs,” he wrote in the caption of a photo of the team.
