Niels Bohr began his education at Gammelholm Latin School when he was seven years old, and he enrolled as an undergraduate at Copenhagen University in 1903. He majored in physics and studied under Professor Christian Christiansen, the university’s lone physics professor at the time.

Niels Bohr also studied astronomy and mathematics with Professor Thorvald Thiele, and philosophy with Professor Harald Hffding, a family friend.

Niels Bohr established the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Copenhagen, now known as the Niels Bohr Institute, in 1920, and he mentored and collaborated with physicists such as Hans Kramers, Oskar Klein, George de Hevesy, and Werner Heisenberg.

Niels Bohr conducted a series of experiments at the university using his father’s laboratory; the university itself did not have a physics laboratory. He had to manufacture his own glassware to conduct his investigations, creating test tubes with the needed elliptical cross-sections.
