The Norfolk Southern Railway (reporting mark NS) is a Class I freight railroad in the United States that was formed in 1982, with the merger of Norfolk and Western Railway and Southern Railway.

With headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. The company operates 19,420 route miles (31,250 km) in about 22 eastern states, and the District of Columbia, and has rights in Canada over the Albany to Montréal route of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

NS is responsible for maintaining 45,700 km, with the remainder being operated under trackage rights from other parties responsible for maintenance.

Intermodal containers and trailers are the most common type of commodity carried by NS, which have grown as the coal business has declined throughout the 21st century; coal was formerly the largest source of traffic.

NS offers the largest intermodal rail network in eastern North America. It was also the pioneer of the Roadrailer service. NS and its chief competitor, CSX Transportation, have a duopoly on the transcontinental freight rail lines in the Eastern U.S.

  1. This is why we should be using pipelines where possible instead of trains. There should be a limit on amounts of bulk hazmat trains should be allowed to transport at one time. Additionally the hazmat cars should be at the rear of the string of cars since most derailed cars will usually be towards the front of the line.
